Arterial blood gas (ABG)
Australian PFT lab, Lahore, Pakistan

ABG or arterial blood gas analysis is a special type of medical test which determines the oxygen concentration, carbon dioxide concentration and various acids in the blood stream. It also provides the value of various electrolytes and acid status of the body. This test can be performed at Australian PFT Lab, DHA 5, Lahore.

ABG also helps us to determine the oxygenation status of a person along with ventilation status.

The following parameters are measured during arterial blood gas analysis.

pH of blood.

pH of blood determines the acidity of the blood. The normal pH of human blood is 7.36- 7.44. If it is below 7.36, it’s called acidosis and if it is higher than 7.44, it is called alkalosis.

Concentration of oxygen or partial pressure of oxygen:

ABG analysis provides the exact concentration of oxygen in the blood. It reflects the oxygenation capacity of the lungs. The normal partial pressure of oxygen is 75-100 mmHg. If it is reduced below 75 mmHg, it represents reduce oxygenation/impairment of the lung function.

The concentration of carbon dioxide/partial pressure of carbon dioxide:

ABG also provides exact concentration of carbon dioxide which is measured as a partial pressure. The normal value of carbon dioxide is 35-45mmHg. If lungs are not working well, the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood increases correspondingly.

There are many other parameters which are routinely measured in arterial blood gas analysis or can be measured on top of the basic measurements.

It is an important test in patients who has a significant lung impairment or illness to determine the exact concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream. It also helps to determine the need of oxygen use at home in the long run.

We have established first private, state of the art breathing laboratory, Australian Pulmonary Function Laboratory in Lahore where  comprehensive pulmonary function tests can be performed. The lab also has the facility to perform bronchial challenge test, skin allergy test and sleep studies.

Dr Sarwar Chaudhry  has trained in Australia, and he has vast experience how to manage patients with complex lung issues and sleep disorders. He also manages the lab and reports the tests.
