Exhaled nitric oxide or NO is a gas which is produced from inflammation in the lungs. It is commonly called FeNO. Australian Pulmonary function lab in Lahore can measure FeNO in patients with suspected or confirmed airway disease. Patients who have significant asthma and eosinophilic inflammation in the airways or lungs produce more nitric oxide in the lungs which is exhaled and can be measured by a specialized device.
FeNO test can now be performed in Pakistan using state-of-the-art technology. This test helps us in patients who has inflammatory airway disease or asthma, to determine the severity of the illness and to monitor the response to the treatment. This test does not require any blood sampling and is painless.
It is indicated in patient who have known asthma or suspected asthma. It could be very helpful in patient who have difficult to treat asthma or treatment resistant asthma and, to measure ongoing inflammation in the lungs. This also helps us to consider alternative causes of breathlessness.
We usually perform FeNo in conjunction with the spirometry and other breathing tests to get a comprehensive analysis of the lung health.
