When should you consider a sleep assessment?
Sleep problems have different causes. A consultation helps establish whether your symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnoea or another issue, and which investigation is likely to help.
Symptoms during the night
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Breathing pauses noticed by a partner
- Gasping or choking during sleep
- Restless, disrupted or unrefreshing sleep
Symptoms during the day
- Excessive sleepiness or persistent fatigue
- Morning headaches or a dry mouth
- Poor concentration or reduced alertness
- Feeling sleepy while driving or at work
Diagnostic service
Level 2 home sleep studies
For suitable patients, we offer an overnight Level 2 sleep study in the home environment. The study records signals used to assess sleep and breathing, including brain activity, eye movements, airflow, breathing effort, oxygen levels, heart activity and limb movements. The precise setup is explained before your appointment.
A Level 2 study is performed without a technologist monitoring you throughout the night. It provides more information about sleep stages than a limited home breathing test, but the most appropriate test still depends on your history and the question your doctor needs to answer.
What to expect
A clear path from symptoms to a plan
1. Consultation
Discuss your symptoms, medical history, medicines, previous sleep investigations and any observations made by your sleeping partner.
2. Choose the investigation
If a study is appropriate, the team explains the recording equipment, fitting arrangements and preparation for the night.
3. Overnight recording
Sleep at home with the fitted sensors. The recording is then reviewed in the context of your symptoms and clinical history.
4. Results and follow-up
Discuss what the study shows, what it does not establish, and whether treatment, further assessment or follow-up is needed.
Care after diagnosis
Sleep apnoea treatment and CPAP support
If obstructive sleep apnoea is diagnosed, treatment is tailored to its severity, your symptoms and your wider health. Options may include positive airway pressure (CPAP or APAP), positional approaches, weight management where relevant, or referral for another treatment.
For patients using CPAP, follow-up can address mask fit, comfort, dryness, air leaks, treatment data and persistent symptoms. Bring your machine, mask and available reports to a review appointment.
Your physician
Specialist-led sleep and respiratory care
Dr G. Sarwar Chaudhry, MBBS, FRACP (Australia), FCCP (USA), is a consultant pulmonologist and sleep physician at Australian Polyclinic. The consultation connects the study findings with your symptoms and helps determine a practical treatment and follow-up plan.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sleep study just because I snore?
Not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea. Breathing pauses, gasping, significant sleepiness and your medical history help determine whether testing is appropriate.
Is the home study the right test for everyone?
No. Your doctor will consider your symptoms and other medical conditions before recommending a test. Further assessment may be needed if a result is inconclusive or does not explain persistent symptoms.
Will the study hurt?
The sensors record signals from your body; they do not deliver electrical treatment. They may feel unfamiliar, and the team will explain what to expect when fitting them.
Can you help if I already use CPAP?
Yes. Ask for a CPAP review and bring your machine, mask and any available study or treatment reports.
