Snoring and breathing pauses
Loud snoring, gasping or pauses noticed by a partner may suggest obstructive sleep apnoea, though snoring alone does not confirm it.
Understand sleep apnoea →Snoring, difficulty sleeping and daytime tiredness can have different causes. Dr G Sarwar Chaudhry assesses your symptoms and recommends the next step, whether that means advice, treatment review, a sleep study or another specialist assessment.
A symptom does not always point to one diagnosis. Start with the concern you recognise; a consultation can help identify what needs investigating.
Loud snoring, gasping or pauses noticed by a partner may suggest obstructive sleep apnoea, though snoring alone does not confirm it.
Understand sleep apnoea →Taking a long time to fall asleep, waking often or waking too early deserves a review of sleep patterns, health, medicines and possible contributing conditions.
Feeling sleepy despite adequate time in bed can reflect disrupted sleep, insufficient sleep, medication effects or a less common sleep disorder.
An urge to move the legs in the evening, or movements noticed during sleep, can interfere with sleep and may call for targeted assessment.
Sleep timing that conflicts with work or daily life may benefit from a review of your schedule, habits and other causes of poor sleep.
Sleepwalking, dream enactment or other concerning night-time behaviour should be discussed with a clinician, particularly if there is a risk of injury.
We review sleep habits, medical conditions, medicines, daytime symptoms and observations from anyone who shares your room.
Some concerns are assessed mainly through history. Where appropriate, a Level 2 home sleep study can record sleep and breathing overnight.
Dr Sarwar explains the findings and next steps, which may include treatment, CPAP support, another investigation or referral.
Our Australian Sleep Diagnostic Laboratory explains the Level 2 home sleep study, what it records and how results are reviewed. It is the place to start if your doctor has recommended a study or you want to understand how testing works.
If you already use CPAP or APAP, a review can address mask fit, air leaks, comfort, dryness, available device data and ongoing symptoms. Read our first-month CPAP guide.
